How to LA: Finding Home con DACA

How to LA host Brian De Los Santos found out he was undocumented in middle school, after coming to the U.S. from Mexico with his mother at the age of 2. Then he got DACA - Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. That allowed him to get a driver’s license and a work permit. But Brian couldn’t leave the country… until he applied for something called “Advance Parole,” a government permit that allows DACA recipients to travel outside the U.S for specific, valid reasons. There’s a catch though: Even if you are granted permission to travel, re-entry back into the U.S. is not guaranteed.

Still, Brian applied – and went back to Mexico. In this one hour special, Brian talks about the hurdles he had to jump to make this trip work and what it meant to go back to the country of his birth for the first time in 30 years – a place he may not be able to go back to again as DACA and a path to citizenship is in limbo.
