Cinco de Mayo: ¡Viva México!

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, an event where the Mexican army defeated the French forces of Napoleon the Third. Although Cinco de Mayo isn’t particularly celebrated in Mexico, it remains a day that acknowledges Mexican heritage in the United States.

In this special, Ines Guanchez will share the history of Cinco do Mayo through the music of Mexican and Chicano composers from the past and present that celebrates Mexican national pride and heritage.

Ines Guanchez

Ines is an assistant digital producer for YourClassical MPR. Born into a Venezuelan family, Ines graduated from the University of Minnesota with master’s degrees in mass communications and piano performance. Afterward, she founded the Dúo Ávila, named after the Ávila national park in Caracas, with fellow Venezuelan violinist Sofia Schutte. The ensemble focuses on music by composers outside of the classical canon and has performed in venues in Minnesota and Costa Rica. She previously interned for Minnesota Public Radio in 2018.
