11 a.m. - 12 p.m.: Understanding AI and Its Impact on Public Media

Location: Grand Ballroom at the Little America Hotel

There is a lot of apprehension, ignorance, and fear of AI and how its use impacts our industry and our society, today and in the future. Good or bad, AI is becoming part of our daily lives, and the technology is already in use in many other sectors across the world. It’s time to set the apprehension and fears aside and become conversant in AI so we can help our audiences understand its impact on our lives. This session will look at the different forms of AI, its rapid development, and the responsible use of this powerful tool. We'll talk about the positives, the negatives, and the moral and ethical questions we are faced with when we apply artificial intelligence to our work.

Speakers: Tarik Moody, Jon Zilkha (BBC)

Moderator: Ernesto Aguilar

3-3:45 p.m.: Cultivating Classical Hosts That Connect

Location: Teton at the Little America Hotel

In this session, we'll talk about finding, training (& re-training) talent for a new era of classical radio. From searching in unexpected places, to breaking it down for charismatic storytellers with no radio experience, and building new skills in seasoned hosts, we'll find out how classical stations develop talent with diverse people from varied backgrounds to support public media’s goals of reaching and engaging new audiences and deepening community partnerships.

Speakers: Julie Amacher (C24), Daniel Gilliam, Eric Glissmeyer

Moderator: Kelsey McConnell

4-4:45 p.m.: Engaging Bilingual Communities

Location: Teton at the Little America Hotel

Last year, Avanza 88.3 launched as Utah’s first bilingual radio station, intended to meet the cultural and information needs of the growing Latino population in the region. Avanza is blazing a trail, but that means there is no playbook. It requires developing new programming and finding new ways to engage with the community it’s designed to serve. In this session, Marketplace’s Kimberly Adams introduces us to Avanza’s Program Director Edgar Zuniga, the person who is blazing that trail. We’ll learn about his programming and audience development plans and how the station connects to its bilingual audience.

Speaker: Edgar Zuniga

Moderator: Kimberly Adams (Marketplace)
