Irish Music and the Piano: from Shebeen to Stage

This entertaining and ear-warming special is filled with Irish folk and traditional tunes transcribed, arranged and composed for piano, which is in itself unique. In Ireland, the instrument almost always missing from a traditional Irish music ‘session’ is the piano, but Irish music is increasingly being championed and performed by classical pianists.

The special explores the history of the piano in Irish music and features recordings by Barry Douglas, John O’Connor, Michael McHale and Ruth McGinley. We’ll also hear from the artists themselves, talking about why Irish music is important to them and to classical music in a broader context.
