Guest host Meg Wolitzer presents our holiday show--two stories about being home for the holidays and how you can count on your Mom to be there for you—and possibly to complicate things.

First, memoirist Augusten Burroughs recalls a disastrous—and hilarious—childhood cooking project. Reader Michael Cerveris relishes every bite.

And in “Live Wires” by Thomas Beller, a young man invites his girlfriend to his mother’s annual Hanukkah party. The reader is Jane Curtin.

Encore. Originally aired in December 2021

Meg Wolitzer

Meg Wolitzer sold her first novel, Sleepwalking, when she was 22 and a senior at Brown. Since then, Meg’s many books have included The Female Persuasion, The Interestings, and The Wife, which was made into the acclaimed film starring Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce. Meg has taught widely, and is a faculty member in the MFA program at Stony Brook Southampton, where she co-founded and co-directs BookEnds, a one-year non-credit intensive in novel writing. The opportunity to host “Selected Shorts” is thrilling to her, because not only will she be able to celebrate words and language, and of course short stories, but she will also get a chance to explore the stories with the writers and actors on-air, “which,” she says, “is pretty much the opposite of what I do most of the time, alone at my desk.” She lives in New York City with her husband, writer Richard Panek, and their 14-year-old Havanese dog Jet.
